GatoradePutnam County Schools is proud to announce Poca Senior, Christian Buckley, as the 2013-14 Gatorade West Virginia Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Christian received this title over the summer from Gatorade in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports.

Buckley is a two time state Class AA champion in both shot put and discus. As a junior, he set the state AA record for shot put last season at 59’ 7.5” at the WV state track meet in 2014. The only shot put thrower in state history to throw farther is Olympic Gold Medalist Randy Barnes at 61’ 7” in Class AAA. Buckley received a blue ribbon in discus at the 2014 state track meet with a throw of 174’ 4” that landed him at #6 on the all time, all class discus list. Christian’s incredible throws led the Dots to a 7th place team finish overall. Buckley also finished first at the state meet in discus and shot put as a sophomore in 2013.

The Gatorade WV Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award is annually recognized nationwide. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade High School Sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports. They work with sports specific experts and the media advisory board of accomplished veteran prep sports journalists to determine each state winner. Buckley was a finalist for their National Track Athlete of the Year Award.

Poca’s head track coach, John Bonecutter, told Gatorade “I have never had a kid as dedicated and motivated as Christian. He’ll throw in two practices a day and then go to the YMCA and work out. He’s just a real motivated kid.”

Additionally, Christian has reached All-American status six times over the past four years at the USATF Junior Olympics, competing in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. This summer he placed third nationally in shot put and sixth nationally in discus.

Furthermore, Christian has accomplished all of this while maintaining a 4.14 GPA. He serves as the senior class president, National Honor Society President, and recently qualified as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. He helps his community as a peer tutor, youth track coach, and summer basketball counselor with BBT Basketball Clinics. Last season Christian also helped the Dots to a state tournament appearance in basketball. Christian is still looking at his options in higher education, but is currently being recruited by several high major Division I colleges for athletics and academics.
